Author Notes:

Fun fact: the word probably still should be "prætentious", as the French word is spelt with an "é", which is pronounced the same way as an æ. I suspect that "prætentious" was one of the words affected by the spelling reform which also struck "encylopædia", mediæval", and "pædophilia", among others. Fun!

Trope-tan doesn't resemble Haruhi as much as I would like. I have determined why: she has blue hair. Unfortunately certain elements of the plot dictated that the hair colours had to remain the same, but look what happens when one changes it:
She looks like Haruhi when the hair is the right colour.
Even with the tooth still there, that is undeniably Suzumiya Haruhi.

@Zauber Paracelsus: Quoting Google's define:pretentious, it means "making claim to or creating an appearance of importance or distinction", as you've said. It also can refer to one's being overly pompous and thereby lacking elegance. Admittedly, neither definition really fits the interpretation I'm using here.

I figure that constantly correcting the errors of others inflates one's own sense of importance relative to them, thereby producing such an appearance. The "pompous" part is the source of "darnce" and other such correct pronunciations.

I'm glad the hair colours don't change. Otherwise there would be literally no way to tell who was who, except for speech patterns/behaviour (it's a stick figure comic, after all).

It occurs to me that counter-espionage would be very difficult for anyone living in the Book.

I'm not sure the usage of the word pretentious is actually correct. The word means "one who believes they are more important than they really are, usually without proper justification."

and then 'well.crap.'

that is elegant.

The Author: Jane, I don't get it! Why didn't you use any magic for costuming?
Jane: Because, *Author*, that would be *cheating*.

The Author: And Trope-tan? Why didn't you-
Trope-tan: Same reason, nyoro.

Bob: You called it a "darnce".
The Author: I figured that since I'm omnipotent, it really wouldn't matter if you wanted to punch me.
Bob: Oh. Crap. Good point.

Bob: In any case, you were wrong about the word "pretentious". I looked it up.
The Author: When? While dancing?
Bob: No, between comics. Duh.

Bob: While the original Latin word was certainly spelt "prætensus", it then became a French word, "prétention", later "prétentieux".
The English word "pretentious" derives from that French word, and therefore is spelt "pretentious".

The Author: You do realise that by correcting my pronunciation, spelling, and especially etymology of the word "pretentious", you are yourself being pretentious?

Bob: Well, crap.
