@Guest: Funny? Partially. It was mostly meant to introduce and demonstrate the mechanic of narrator impersonation, and was possibly humorous as a side-effect.

'tis a rather poor application of functional style, what with these side-effects. Later comics are written more robustly; many offer complete referential transparency, and are thus no longer at all humorous.

@ugh?: Not really sure why it's bothering you, but it's to allow for searching the complete text of each comic. Basically, it makes the search box at the top work.

Also, if that's not enough reason: A transcript on the page is useful to people who can't see or have major vision problems. Since there are programs to read out what's on the screen to the person in front of the computer, a transcript lets them have the comic anyway.
